Practice pivots, getting low and the blow by and slipping the inside hand between you and the defender.
With the back to the basket, pivot on the right foot, bringing the left foot in front of right foot (forward pivot) and square up facing the basket. Stay low while pivoting. This keeps the defender from moving in close to the body. Sweep, hard and low into a long and efficient step towards the basket (or open space). As you step past the defender slide the inside hand in between you and the defender, like shaking hands, and use your strength to hold the defender as you move by. Also practice pivots off the left foot (right foot in front of left foot).
