Practice the basic drop step footwork in the post and on the perimeter.
IN THE POST: Get position above the block. Jump to the pass, landing low and wide in a balanced position, chinning the ball – facing the sideline. Check over the high shoulder to identify the defense. Without moving the feet, fake / lean to the high side and drop the low side foot back and towards the basket – step long and low then pivot towards the basket, keeping the ball high, and finish the shot.
Practice drop steps to the baseline and to the middle – left and right side.
Variation – Open with a reverse pivot, sweep to the middle of the key with one dribble then drop step to the basket. ,
ON THE PERIMETER: The drop step can be used effectively on the perimeter as well. Coming off a cut or a curl, catch the pass with a jump stop. This allows for the use of either foot as the pivot foot. Fake lean to one side to influence the defender, getting her to favor that side. Drop the opposite foot long and low, pivot into the drop side and throw the dribble out, pulling you away from the defender. Practice off both feet.
