Practice the pro stance move to step back away from the defender and create space for the shot or drive.
This move can be used in the post or on the perimeter. The shooter faces the court with her back to the baseline. She uses an arm bar to hold the defender in position with her hand out as a target. The passer leads the players out, away from the defender. The player steps to the pass in the same way you would execute a defensive slide. Step as wide as possible while still maintaining proper balance. Maintain the space between the feet as the pass is caught. Ideally, the shoulder nearest the defender is perpendicular to the defender’s chest on the catch. Draw the foot nearest the defender away from the defender, squaring up to the basket on the step away. This step away from the defender creates space for the jump shot. Practice shooting the jump shot in rhythm. If the defender steps up into the shooter’s space the counter moves is a rip through and drive to the basket.
