Practice pick and roll defense including fighting over the top of the screen, hedging and the ICE alternative.
Players play two on two. The offensive players pass the ball back and forth but do not advance the ball. The defensive players use proper technique, sliding. After 10 seconds the offensive players can dribble and screen. The defenders must communicate re: the screen and read the screen. The help defender steps out (hedges) to help or steps back to allow the slide through. If teaching players to fight through the screens encourage them to use their arms, extended, on both sides, as with the arm bar, to get low, keep the feet free and avoid getting stuck on the screen. Teach the defender to step over the screener’s leg. See the clips below for demonstrations of the above as well as an alternative defensive strategy called ICE.
