Practice denying the baseline drive.
Some defensive philosophies preach forcing the ball to the baseline. Others preach denying the baseline drive. To deny the baseline the defender must move to the baseline shoulder of the offensive player, forcing the player to attack away from the baseline. In this drill focus on the approach and the quick movement of the defender’s feet. Move the feet, keep the hands high and avoid reaching in and creating foul situations.
Player #1 is at the top of the key with a ball. Player #2 is on the wing, below the elbow. Player #3 is in the opposite corner. Player #2 and #3 are defended. Player #1 passes to player #2 on the wing. Player #2 tries to drive to the baseline. If the defender prevents the baseline drive, player #2 pivots and passes out to player #1. Player #1 then passes to player #3 in the opposite corner. Player #3 tries to drive baseline. If player #3 is prevented from getting the baseline she pivots and passes out to player #1.
