Practice setting up the correct angle for a sideline pick and roll
The ballhandler can set the proper angle for gaining separation from the ball defender by bringing her defender down below the pick and then dribbling back to the pick. First practice cutting off the pick without a ball moving down towards the baseline then cutting back to the pick, “rubbing shoulders” with the pick and accelerating down the lane. Once the proper angle is performed add the ball (a more difficult task). The ball handler must change her orientation from facing the baseline to facing the lane, back to the basket. This can be done by using a hip swivel or a step back move to make space. Once facing the lane, an effective inside out dribble move might get the defender to lean towards the baseline and make it easier to execute a sound cross over, between the legs or around the back dribble move and use the pick to create separation. A reverse dribble can also be used. As the ballhandler comes across the pick she must read the defense to inform her next decision – score or pass. See Reading the Pick and Roll – Ballhandler below.
