Description

Practice maintaining composure and awareness of a 5 second violation.

Summary

A five second call occurs when we have possession of the ball and we fail to pass, shoot or dribble within 5 seconds, or when we fail to advance our dribble within 5 seconds. In reality we actually have a minimum of 12 seconds from the time we receive the ball before a violation can occur. On the catch we can rip and pivot for 4 seconds, then dribble for another4 seconds and then rip and pivot again for 4 seconds.

This drill practices the rips, pivots, dribbles and toughness needed to maintain ball security. Match up one defender on one offensive player. The offensive player tosses the ball up and steps to it. The defender steps up and defends hard. She can push and grab as the offensive player rips and pivots to a count of 4, then dribbles for 4 more , then rips and pivots for another 4.
