Description

Practice dribbling against pressure from one, two, or three defenders. (video option)

Summary

The ball handler starts inbounds at the end line. A defender pressures the ball on the whistle. Two defenders wait at the foul line, one at each elbow. When the ball handler reaches the foul line extended area the defender at the nearest elbow joins the on ball defender and tries to trap the ball handler. If the ball handler dribbles to the middle of the court the third defender joins as soon as the ball handler crosses the imaginary line running from rim to rim, OR, if the ball handler beats the two defenders to the top of the 3-point line extended. The ball handler must use trap escape strategies to avoid being trapped. These strategies include – staying in the middle third of the court, attacking one of the first two trappers, using a power dribble / hip swivel to retreat and gain space, and using a reverse dribble to escape a trap. If the ball handler picks up her dribble she must use the step back / step through method to protect the ball and pass to a coach. Other methods could include a desperation option – throwing the ball off the defender’s leg.

Intensity can be adjusted by offering the ball handler one time out and / or the option of passing back to a coach. If she uses a time out she begins again where the time out was called. If she passes back to a coach, she must retrieve the ball and get it over the time line without a 10 second violation. If she uses a step back / step through to pass to a coach or dribbles over the mid-court line she wins.
