Speed is an advantage on the basketball court, much like height can be an advantage. Unlike height, speed and agility can be improved. Even more effective than speed is the ability to change speed and change direction. Changing direction involves agility. Players who can move from fast to slow, and / or slow to fast and who can get their defender to turn, can break down a defense and create scoring opportunities for themselves and their teammates.
Each player’s balance position may differ slightly but typically the position is – feet about shoulder width apart, shoulders over the knees, knees over the toes. The head and chin are up for balance and court vision. Your head is made of bone and water – it’s very heavy. If you drop your head you can affect your balance.
Triple Threat Stance – head and chin up, weight on balls of your feet, shoulders square, knees and waist bent, ball held up by chest, elbows out to protect the ball – in position to shoot, pass or dribble.
